Art Deco Salimbeni
The Art Deco style was highly requested by clients such as Cartier USA and Tiffany for their collections. In the 70s, numerous new objects inspired by Art Deco were created from these collaborations between Salimbeni and the brands using precious metals, semi-precious stones and enamels.
Art Deco Style
Art Deco was born as Art Nouveau in France. Officially in 1925 with the Parisian exhibition International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. The name comes from the abbreviation of “Art Decoratif”.
What characterizes the Art Deco style?
Characterized by sharper lines and geometric shapes than Art Nouveau, the Art Déco style manifests itself with bright and contrasting colors. This style has spread globally, influencing design from Shanghai to New York under construction, up to various areas of Europe. Artists and designers of the time tried their hand at creating works of art, everyday objects and furniture, building interiors and even skyscrapers, adopting this innovative style. Figures like Sandoz in Paris, Lalique with its crystals, Puiforcat and its silverware, Erté with its avant-garde fashion designs, Tiffany with its lamps and Louis Cartier with its pieces inspired by the East (hence the link with Shanghai) were pioneers of this movement.
Art Deco Style and Cartier Usa
During his jewelry exhibitions in the USA, particularly in New York, he came into contact with Cartier buyers and later also with Tiffany, for whom he created pieces in this style, based on the original drawings by Louis Cartier provided by the buyer of the ‘ era, but with unique and original interpretations. Many of the objects Salimbeni created for Cartier in the USA were inspired by famous Cartier pieces that belonged to illustrious people, such as Mary Pickford’s jewelery set, which included a powder compact, a cigarette case, a pill box and a handbag from evening.

What is modern Deco style?
Art Deco, with its geometric pomp and sometimes pastel hues, represented the pinnacle of modernity at the dawn of the 20th century. Following the Great Depression, the style was considered excessively frivolous and was supplanted by Modernism, a more sober and functional style.
